About Us
Department of Plant Biology was established in June, 2012 as part of Bayero University, Kano Strategic Plan. The Department is an off-shoot of the former Biological Sciences Department which has been in existence since the establishment of Bayero University, Kano in 1976. At present, the Department offers B.Sc., M.Sc. and PhD. degrees in Botany. In 2021, the University Senate has granted approval for the Department to commence B.Sc. Biotechnology program aimed at producing graduates with the necessary understanding on the concepts and principles of theoretical and technical knowledge, skills and abilities in modern molecular technology for the global job market.
The Department is adequately equipped with functional laboratories, screenhouse, plant nursery and herbarium, among other facilities to facilitate effective teaching and learning. At present, the Department is concerned about the growing threats to the survival of indigenous and resilient plant species of our local environment and also committed to the protection, conservation and exploitation of their genetic potentials for use in agriculture, health care and the service industry. We hence, welcome closer cooperation and collaboration for mutual benefits.
